Optimization Theory has wide applications in areas such as computer science, industrial engineering, management science, etc. My research focuses on both theoretical development and practical applications of Optimization Theory. Accordingly, I am going to divide my presentation into three sections. In the first section, I will introduce my PhD dissertation research. This is a theory-based research, in which I studied three problems related to the Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming (QCQP) problems. The results of my study would be helpful in designing efficient algorithms for solving a class of QCQP problems. The second section consists of a review of three application-based projects I am currently working on, which include L1 splines with locally computed coefficients, L1 norm based Principal Component Analysis, and a technique to reduce the number of multi-valued discrete variables. The third section of my presentation will be an outline of my future research plan.


Jin, Qingwei received a B.S. in Information and Computing (2004) and a M.S. in Operations Research (2007) from Tsinghua University. He is currently a doctoral candidate at North Carolina State University majoring in Industrial Engineering, and is expected to graduate in summer, 2011. Mr. Jin’s dissertation research focused on “Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming Problems and Extensions.” Along with PhD study, Mr. Jin is also serving as a research assistant in two projects sponsored by US Army Research Office. Mr. Jin’s areas of interest involve linear and non-linear optimization, combinatorial optimization, production planning/flowshop scheduling, metaheuristics/soft computing, and computer aided geometric design.
